Alex McKeel
Alex McKeel Portrait

Meet Alex McKeel!

I grew up playing and studying classical music in South Carolina, performing in a variety of ensembles and orchestras, both professional and amateur. In college I began studying jazz and improvisation performing both solo and in Clemson’s jazz ensembles, as well as forming a few informal groups with other students. I now live in Atlanta, teaching private lessons and performing and recording as much as I can!

Why I Became A Musician

When I was younger, playing music in my local community, I found it brought everyone a lot closer together. I look at music as a community building tool, and that is why I will always keep it in my life.

My Memorable Musical Experience

I had a regular gig in college playing long solo piano sets in this historic dinner club in Aiken’s horse district. It was a very great experience as a young person to play for an older crowd like this who had lived through the eras I was playing music from. I learned a lot from their stories and their connection to jazz from the 40s, 50s and 60s.

A fun fact about me is...

I love to cook.

My advice to someone starting to learn music is...

Get to your instrument every single day, even if just for a minute or two!

My Memorable Musical Experience

Concerning music, a fond memory of mine occured during middle school. I was given the opportunity to perform an ensemble piece during a choir concert, and this turned out to be a wonderul and affirming experience. I have been a student of music ever since.

A fun fact about me is...

I own two cats.

My advice to someone starting to learn music is...

When learning an instrument, new students will see immediate growth after incorpoting scale and rhythmic practice. Additionally finding songs that inspire will foster continuous interest.

John Jorgensen
John Jorgensen Portrait

Meet John Jorgensen!

I have been playing guitar and bass for 30+ years, keyboard and drums for 15 years. I have a degree in music and dual master’s degrees in the Humanities. I love teaching and do so around 25% of my week and produce music the rest: selling my music to use in TV/Cable/Streaming outlets. I’m currently a guitar player in Valley Range (a Charlotte band), a reggae band and an electronic project.

Why I Became A Musician

The rock/pop/garage music of the 1960s was my first musical love. Bands like The Who, The Beatles, The Kinks, etc were central to me wanting to learn how to play guitar and learn songwriting and later, production (recording & mixing).

My advice to someone starting to learn music is...

Have some music that you love on the instrument that you are learning. The desire to hear that music will be an engine to learn it together with your instrument. Also, take your time and let your mind and fingers develop at your individual pace - all while keeping the joy of music alive.

Kyle Schneider
Kyle Schneider Portrait

Meet Kyle Schneider!

Ever since he heard the blistering drum groove at the start of “Hot for Teacher” by Van Halen, Kyle knew that drumming was something he wanted to pursue. After many years of mastering the drums on Guitar Hero and Rock Band, Kyle’s Dad surprised him with a busted drum set that he has since renovated extensively.
Kyle’s love for genre playing has evolved heavily, beginning from an interest in classic rock music to Jazz and improvisational skill in his high school years. Kyle also applied his inherent and rhythmic musical talents to the piano, expanding his reach instrumentally. Kyle then made the big leap after graduation to study music academically at ECU as a Music Performance Major.
Kyle is currently attached to two big musical projects, the Chapel Hill based Rock band “Alice Blue” as well as the Durham Jazz Collective “SMYA” where he and the other members contribute their own compositions. Kyle is also a skilled audio engineer, with many of his self produced drum recordings appearing for artists around the Triangle.

Why I Became A Musician

What inspired me to become a musician? Honestly, it started with my love for how music makes people feel. Growing up, I saw how powerful it was—how a song could change someone’s mood, bring people together, or give somebody confidence they didn’t know they had. Over time, I realized I wanted to be part of that. Being a vocalist, working with kids, mentoring, and helping others grow just made it even clearer: music isn’t just something I do, it’s part of who I am. Seeing people light up when they learn something new, or when they connect with a song—that’s what really inspired me and keeps me going every day.

My advice to someone starting to learn music is this: Start with patience and passion. Don’t worry about being perfect right away—focus on building good habits, listening carefully, and practicing consistently. Surround yourself with music that inspires you, ask questions when you don’t understand something, and celebrate every bit of progress, no matter how small. Music is a journey, and the more you stay open, curious, and committed, the further it will take you.
