Meet Byron Gettings Jr.!

Byron Gettings Jr. is a student-centered Band Director and Music Educator with 5+ years of experience dedicated to instrumental instruction, ensemble leadership, and program development. I am committed to fostering strong musicianship, a positive culture, and meaningful musical experiences that inspire students to develop confidence, discipline, and artistic expression.

Why I Became A Musician

I was inspired to become a musician through my experiences in school band and the sense of community and accomplishment that music provided. As I developed my skills as a percussionist, I discovered a passion for performing and working with others to create something meaningful. The mentors and music educators in my life also inspired me to pursue music and eventually become a teacher myself.

My Memorable Musical Experience

My most memorable musical moment was leading the John W. Neal Middle School Band at the Festival Disney Music competition in Orlando, Florida. The program had not attended a festival in 17 years. Watching my students perform with confidence and earn an "Excellent" rating was incredibly rewarding because it reflected their hard work and the growth of our band program. It reminded me of the powerful impact music can have on students' lives.

A fun fact about me is...

I started college as a kinesiology major before finding my purpose in music education.

My advice to someone starting to learn music is...

Every musician starts as a beginner, and improvement comes through consistent practice, perseverance, and a willingness to make and learn from mistakes. Focus on getting a little better each day, and don't be afraid to ask questions or seek help along the way. 30 minutes of quality practice a day will change your life as a beginning musician.
