Matthew Johnston is a graduate of Winthrop University with a degree in guitar performance. He started playing music at age 12 and immediately started playing in all of his church’s worship ministries. Growing up, he listened to a lot of classic rock and blues. At Winthrop, he studied jazz guitar, bass and piano extensively and now feels comfortable with almost any genre of music. After graduation, Matthew began to teach at local studios around the Rock Hill area. He also performs in several bands in Rock Hill, SC including The Raymond Franklin Band, Cyan, and the Kyle Dills band. He has performed all across the state of South Carolina and even played at Tootsies, the famous club on Broadway St in Nashville, TN. He has recorded guitar and bass for several projects and prides himself in his gear knowledge and recording techniques. Matthew has also performed two shows at Theatre Charlotte (Aida and Spring Awakening) under musical direction of Zack Tarlton. He has been teaching guitar since 2013 and has had several students go on to major in music at the collegiate level. Matthew is patient and understands that any instrument/skill takes a focused, dedicated mindset to achieve great things.
