Ann Marie McNemar

Ann Marie graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA in 2011 with a Bachelor’s of Music with a concentration in music industry. She was a member of the JMU flute studio for 4 years, studying under Dr. Beth Chandler. She was a member of The Marching Royal Dukes for 2 years as a piccolo player, and performed and toured with various ensembles every semester including the JMU Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Concert Band, Flute Choir, and Chamber Orchestra. She has performed in and attended her fair share of flute recitals and workshops with the likes of Trevor Wye and Rhonda Larson to name a few.

During her time at JMU, Ann Marie helped coordinate and volunteer for events like the flute studio’s annual Flute Fling, panel discussions, and other student-focused events. She helped plan and promote local concerts through the Music Industry Association, and found a passion for live music during her time in Harrisonburg. During breaks, she would go home to Culpeper, VA and play flute in a band now called “The Freeway Revival” that plays classic rock and Americana, as well as covers like “Can’t You See” by Marshall Tucker Band. With all of the classical training she was devoted to during her time at JMU, it was a fun break from the rules to jump on stage with friends and jam out to songs they all knew and loved. She also played around with an Irish band for some time (complete with tin whistle, fiddle, and bodhran), a couple members of which turned out to be guest artists during her senior recital. She went on to study Arts Management at George Mason University, and earned an MA in Arts Management in 2013. During her time in D.C., she fell in love with a music venue called The Hamilton Live, located in the heart of our nation’s capital. She started out as a member of their street team, putting flyers up around the city for a short time, then became their Marketing and Box Office Manager after taking on more responsibilities over time and putting in lots of hard work and dedication.

Ann Marie is a classically trained flutist who specializes in the art of practicing. Attention to detail creates improvement and dramatic results in her students. She has a passion for helping students enjoy playing by using their skills as an artistic expression, and becoming a better musician in the process. Her favorite piece to perform is Sonata for Flute and Piano by Francis Poulenc, and her favorite composer is Igor Stravinsky.
