Malcolm began their musical journey at age 5, when they started classical piano lessons in their home town of Hillsborough, North Carolina. With a strong foundation in technique and theory, they began learning on their own, expanding their musical knowledge through natural curiosity and application of those fundamentals. That curiosity led Malcolm to study guitar, bass, drum set, and classical percussion.
In high school they were twice awarded the John Phillip Sousa Award for Exceptional Achievement and received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award as a senior. Malcolm followed their passion for jazz by majoring in Jazz Studies at UNC Charlotte, studying under Dr. Will Campbell as part of the MJR Jazz Scholars scholarship program. At UNCC Malcolm has performed with multiple ensembles and presented three self-composed pieces with the jazz combo. In Malcolm’s second year, they received an award for outstanding achievement and is currently continuing their studies at UNCC. Malcolm resides in Charlotte and is grateful for the opportunity to teach, compose, perform, and collaborate with other local musicians.
